Welcome to the hands-on session at NECC 2008: Promote the Vote: Who Will You Choose? In this model lesson, students will use technology to explore election issues, rank campaign priorities, collaborate with others, and write persuasive text. See ALTEC tools such as PBL Checklists, and PersuadeStar woven seamlessly with other technology applications such as ePals Global Community and SchoolBlog, Intel Tools, and Individual Response Systems (Clickers)!

Making the Case - Using PersuadeStar, SchoolBlog, and PBL Checklists for Peer Editing and Review

1. Students will access ALTEC’s PBL Checklist to create their own checklist for the Promote the Vote Unit to be used with either a Persuasive Essay or Presentation. The PBL Checklist will be used initially by students to determine the criteria on which they will be assessed. Once the PBL Checklist is developed, students will use it to continuously check their work to be sure they are including the required elements. We've attached a sample PBL checklist to this post.

2. After researching Presidential Candidates, students decide which candidate they will support and write a persuasive essay arguing their points. Students will first review the parts of a persuasive essay in class. Then, they will use the PersuadeStar Analyzer Essay to practice putting the persuasive essay paragraphs in order. Finally, students will use the PersuadeStar Planner to plan out their essay. For students continuing with the Persuasive Essay, they will use the PersuadeStar Writer Tool to begin writing the Persuasive Essay from the Planner. If students are going to create a Multimedia presentation, they should use the Planner tool to plan their presentation then create it using the software application/media of their choice.

3. Students will use the blog tool to post their persuasive essays for peer review.

4. Peers will use the checklists they developed to conduct informative peer reviews of final products on the blog before the final presentations.
