Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

(Published in 1813 and is a romantic comedy.)

There are many themes from this story.

1. One theme is about how people are prejudice against the rich.  Elizabeth assumed Darcy was not a very caring person because he was rich and he did act arrogant. She was prejudice against him from his social mannerism of being wealthy. When she learned how helpful he was to her sister Lydia, paying Wickham to marry her, she began to see him differently. After she got to know him better she realized she was wrong in her judgment of him. Also, she was wrong about her first judgment of Wickham, thinking him an honest person when he was, in fact, very dishonest. This shows people are not always what they seem to be.

*** Describe prejudices you have experienced, or seen,  in your community.

2. This story shows how wealthy people have a lot of pride of their wealth and are prejudice against poor people, thinking they are not as good as them. When Darcy's aunt told Elizabeth that she must refuse Darcy's proposal of marriage because she was not a social match for him, it showed her prejudice against poorer people.

*** Describe a situation when you have seen people put other people down just because they don't have as much money.

3. This story also shows how even the poorer people can have pride of having good morals and being honest and true to feelings. When Elizabeth refused Mr. Collins' proposal of marriage, she demonstrated she would not marry someone just for their money, showing her pride of only wanting to marry for love. This was true for her refusal to marry Darcy, too. She refused him because she saw him as arrogant and rude.

*** Describe a situation when you have seen someone stand up for their own personal values, even if other people don't. Describe someone you've seen who has pride in their own beliefs and doesn't change under peer pressure.

4. During this time period parents wanted their daughters to find husbands. All the Bennets wanted their daughters to find husbands.  It was important for women to have a man taking care of them. It was a social disgrace to not be married.

***Describe if your community that you live in has this type of social value. Are woman usually influenced to get married to be more socially accepted?

5. When Charlotte tells Elizabeth she needs to marry Mr. Collins for financial security it shows that women, at that time, were not able to financially succeed on their own.

*** Describe if in your community do women need to get married to be financially secure?

6. It was considered very sinful for a woman to live with a man without being married. Wickham was even paid to marry Lydia so she wouldn't be living in sin.

***Describe if it is sinful for a man and woman to live together without getting married in your community?

7. During this time property was often "entailed" which meant that it was only passed down to male heirs. Women would not inherit property. This was very male dominated society.

***In your community do men have more legal rights than women? Describe if woman are equal or not in situations of property passed down from generation to generation. Also, do women take their husband's last name or do they keep their own name after they get married?

Marrage

I do not think that I my community, women need to get married to be financially secure. Lots of opportunities for women are beginning to emerge in today's world. It is very easy for a woman to succeed on their own.

# 3 having pride and good morals

A good example of a person with good morals and personal vaules that i know would be my bestfriend. she is extremly independent, she puts other before herself, she strive to get where she wants to be and fight for what she wants. never have i seen her give up. she has many vaules that i respect and admire. i guess it realy all depends on what you think are good morals and personal vaule. i personal try to do my best and try to be a good person and always do the right thing. but sometime it can be hard with all of the bad influences around.

Hey!Janet T.I agree with

Hey!Janet T.I agree with u,my best friend has good morals and personal vaules .She studies very hard to reach her goals, also, she is the one that knows how to act in diffrent ocasions.I regard her as my best friend because she never laughs at me like others whenever I am in trouble, she would help me instead. She doesn't have pride when she is not as rich as other students in class, nor the prejudice when she gets a lower mark in the exam.I treat her as my role model,if I find it hard to insist,I would think of her and then encourage myself.maybe u can try it,it's helpful.By the way, could u plz tell me wether the people in your country easily show their pride and prejudice?

Hello Ava

Hello Ava,

I'm so pleased you wrote a response on this blog page. I'm sorry to say, however, that Janet is not my student this year and she will not see your response. I will be having my students, this year, get involved with this Literature blog page sometime around February or March, 2010. Please check back in when I have my students actively responding to the questions. It will be nice for you to get involved with my students at that time. Thank you for writing.

# 3 having pride and good morals

Somebody with pride and good moral that I have seen, would be my bestfriend. she allow nobody to walk over her, she is extremly independent. she want to become an F.B.I agent which to me is every moble. she try to do good things and try to be a good person. care about other before herself. she stives to get what she wants and never giving up. she is a very good example of a person who has good morals and has many personal vaules that I respect. i also think it has to depend what you consider pride and personal vaules.

Question #4

In modern day society it is not required for a woman to marry a man to be socially accepted. I feel this is because women are becoming more independent and powerful and don't have to rely on their spouse to get by. This is evident in the 2009 presidential election when Hilary Clinton was running for office. She was the first woman candidate in US history and this shows the progression of equality today. Also, another factor that affects the percentages of marriages is the ammount of people that are coming out of the closet. It seems like more and more gays every year are becoming comfortable with their sexuality and in most states, including California, gay marriage is illegal. Are gays socially accepted in your culture?

Women Don't need to be

Women Don't need to be married to have financial security, at least in our society here in America. Women can go to school and find a job that best suits their careers, and pays well. Some women are better off without a man to help support them, and some women are more wealthy than most men.

Are people who are weathy, happier?

I believe how much money you make and what kind of car you drive does not make you happy. You can have pride while being poor because you know that you have tried your hardest in life. I think many rich people are prejudice against people with less wealth because they think they are superior to them. However, that is a very false statement! It does not take money to have pride or to be happy!

IS it sinful for a woman to live with a man when not married? I think that it is different for ever person depending on how they where raised. Some people believe it is okay and not sinful, which most people believe in my community. Then there are people that believe that it is very sinful and you will go straight to hell for it. I don't believe it is wrong or right. I think it just depends on each person and their chose.

Dear Ashley, to answer your question. I don't think its sinful for a women to life with a man when they are not married. I just think its a little weird, but not sinful. I personally know people that live with their boyfriends, and girlfriends, and both of their parents are okay with it. but I just that i might be a little akward for the individuals when they break up. But thats about it. Are your parents religious to think that if you do this that you'll go straight to hell for it?

My point of view related to the movie Pride and Prejudice.

Well, concerning society at that moment Jane Austen wrote the story that was the base for this movie I believe it has really happened not only on the society she used to live.
However we are living a different world nowadays, the the relationship between men and women (I can surely say) that sometimes it happens. Some situations like a rude, (somewhat) unsocial and ugly men who have great amount of money can 'marry' a beautiful woman just because he has the power ($$$).
I really do believe that in the Elizabeth's situation there were feelings, specially love, that he and she could not avoid.
Even like a criticism for the society at that time on one hand, Jane on the other hand, tried to show us another way to see and understand what happened in the past.

HI! Breno Belem,
I totally agree with you!! In my community, ugly men will ,marry beautiful women all the time. Money is power. I think it is wrong for women to marry men for their money anyway. Both men and women should marry because they find someonhe beautiful inside and out. Do women marry in you society for money?

Hello Breno Belém, I

Hello Breno Belém, I totally agree with you i think that in todays society wealth and power are everything. The more of either of those that you have the better your status will be in society, more people will look up to you and in many situations you will have the upper hand. I notice all the time in my society a good looking women with an ugly man just because he has money. Money means a lot in my society, how important is money in your society?

Response to Breno B.

Hi, Breno Belém!

I do agree with you that in some situations, a wealthy man who has power can marry any women he wants to because of his money. That was because women back then felt the need to rely on the man to support her. However, in my country’s society today, women are becoming more independent and no longer feeling the need of a man to help her live a happy life. Although some women are independent, there are still many women, known as “gold diggers”, who choose to obey older, wealthy men in exchange for their money. Do you have this kind of women in your country?

Hello Breno Belém

Hi Breno !
We do live in a new world, and that world is called today. Women are able to achieve so much more now. Just look at women like Oprah or Ellen. They succeeded their goals and are now giving back. But I do think that there are women still today that marry a man for his money. Nothing sucks more than marrying someone that you think married you for who you are, not the $$$.
Are there any famous women from where your from?

Women vs. Men

Hey Breno,
In today's society women definitely don't need a man to be successful, happy, or anything else. Women have been able to accomplish so much.
I do believe that some people are still like this. If they have money, no matter what they look like, they can always get someone good looking. In this economy, money is everything. It seems that love isn't what matters anymore. It's just materialistic things now. And having enough money to get those things.
Is it like this where you're from?
Do you know anyone personally that is like this?

Women dont need a man to be secure

Hello Breno Belém,

In our society, women do not need a man in their life to be secure, economically. They can go out and get a job, and live on their own. They do not need a man to live on their own. I believe, back in the time period that this book was written, women needed a man in their life to be able to survive. The man's job was to have a job and make money, but now a women can do the same. In your country, do your women have more freedoms than they have in the past?

Recpose #5

I do believe that women do not need a husband to be finacially secure. Of course back in those days you needed to be, becuase a woman could not inherit land, and were look down upon in the society. But today is a new society, and women are no longer like that, and laws of the society have changed greatly. Women now of course could own there own land [house], and live their own life. But there are women, who can be shallow, and marry a man just becuase of his money. But I dont believe that women need a husband to be sucured.

Women don't need to be married

In today's society, women do not need a man to support them. Women can support themselves and are not looked down upon or disgraced if they are not married. Getting married is completely their personal choice and does not really matter one way or another. They can be just as successful with or with out a man. There are many single women and single mothers today supporting themselves and/or their kids and are doing perfectly fine.

Prejudices I have

Prejudices I have experienced first person would be racial prejudices. Racism may have been viewed to have died out after African American rights movements, but it still goes on from a day to day basis. We're all human beings, but some people can't get over the fact that some people may be different based on heritage and skin color, we're all the same and I know the phrase is overemphasized but we should treat others the way we want to be treated.

Q5: Do women need to be married to be financially secure?

In my community, and in today's society, I believe that women do NOT need to be married to be financially secure. Over the past years the level of respect that women have earned has sky-rocketed. They are almost equal with men in the fields of business, athletics, social status, etc. A woman can live alone, get a job, and tend to herself without the help of a man acquired through marriage.

San Diego, CA, USA

Topic 6

In today’s society, it is not sinful for women to live with a man before getting married. The community is more accepting toward unmarried couples living together because it is an arising situation. It seems like when a couple becomes engaged, they immediately move in together because their engagement entitles that they are ready to take a step further in their relationship. In other cases, women are giving birth to babies whose dad is not even the mother’s husband. For example, my two friends who are only eighteen are currently living together in the same house. They feel like they are ready for commitment and full responsibility for their actions. That’s why, at the moment, they are raising a baby together and loving every second of it. As you can see from this situation, not only are young women and men living together without being married to them, they are also starting families.

One thing that I saw a lot of people stand up for even though others didn't was the issue of whether gay people would be able to get married in California. I had friends that believed gays should have the right and friends who thought they didn't and all of them were very for their beliefs and didn't sway regardless what others said.

Woman in todays society are still expected to get married. It is frowned upon to have a child if you are not married.

San Diego, CA, USA

Agreed

I agree with this statement. Today if a woman is successful on her own, it is questioned what she did to get to where she is. It is still considered wrong to have a child with out being married, but I feel marriage should not be a factor in declaring your love for one another. If two people love one another, who says marriage is a neccesity? Women still rely on men to support families, which is not necessary. In Pride and Prejudice, this is shown first hand, as the main character follows her gut and does not give in to the men her family is trying to force her to marry.

i recently over heard a conversation between two people. A man said to an older woman "I dont talk to people who have no money" I thought this was completely rude for anyone to say. It really shouldnt matter who has more money or not. Who are the rich people to say they have a better life,...who are they to judge?

Jack T

I have heard people say this

I have heard people say this too. I agree that this outlook on life is completely rude and downright awful. It's not about how much money you have, it is about what's on the inside. That is what counts. This is shown throughout Pride and Prejudice. They want her to marry for the money, but she wants something greater. -Michael Sanchez San Diego, CA, USA

Most people with money

Most people with money believe that they are better than those who are not as wealthy. This people believe that since they have more money they are more powerful, witch in a way its some what true. (The majority of the people would do just about anything for money.) For example last week I finished reading a book in Spanish and it was about a woman who was very wealthy and she felt she had more say than her servant. This situation is not just in books but all around us as well.

In my community, there isn't any disgrace among women who aren't married. People don't care if your married or not. All my community cares about is that you succeed in a positive manner. Do the people in your neighborhood feel the same as mine? I believe that in America, women don't have to be married to be socially accepted. Women can be lawyers, CEO's, Mayors, Great sports player or just being yourself are few o many ways to be accepted. Are there other ways that woman can be accepted like they are in America?

It seems ironic that in the

It seems ironic that in the U.S. more and more people are granted rights and freedoms that they once did not have, however, more and more people are being discriminated and judged. Especially as a high school student you are judged from everything, including the way you dress or look to your personality. People are put into categories and stereo-typed by their peers. Is that how it is in other countries? People may have equal "rights" but that doesn't necessarily mean they are treated as equals. This is sad to see in our country, especially since we have come so far in the area of equality, and i don't see it getting better in any generation soon.

Megan E. San Diego, CA U.S.A

Ironic

I agree with the fact that even though people are granted rights and freedom, these things are taken away from indivduals on an everyday bases. People have the freedom to express themselves but once they do they are either put down or juged by other indivduals. Our society is so quick to react negatively toward one another. Is that how it is in your country?
Laewm K per.3 San Diego, CA

In our society women are no

In our society women are no longer looked down upon for not being married because in this time period women have become more independent. Women are now able to have finical stability and provide for themselves with out the help of a spouse. So they are no longer forced to find a spouse so that they could be accepted into our society.

Today many people put others

Today many people put others down because they may not have the same amount of money as other person. In the outside world people judge you on your appearance and how many material items you have. Sometimes girls will put down others because they cannot afford the same items that are popular at the time. It still happens today that a rich family would not approve of the marriage of rich and poor people because they feel that they are better because they have more money.

Julie F. p4 San Diego CA. USA

5). In America, women do not

5). In America, women do not need to marry for financial gain in order to thrive. Women have the same opportunities as men and can support themselves. Many women do in fact marry for money and not love, but that does not happen often. Women can care for themselves now, not like old times where men had to do everything for them. Is this the same in your country?

-Michael S. San Diego, CA USA

Response to number 5

In todays society women do not need to be married to be financially secure. The same type of jobs are available to both men and women. This means that women have the same opportunity to be financially secure that men have without being married. Women and men are equal when it comes to jobs, so there shouldnt be a reason why a woman would not be financially secure just because she is a woman.

In todays age its not looked down upon that an unmarried couple live together in a home. In my community alone it would not be sinful to live with a man when you are not married. Today in society it is a pretty normal thing to see. Now if i was to look at what is belived by my family that would be a slightly different story. They really won't take the situation as being sinful, but would respectyour relationship more if you were married.

I have met many people that are underclassman and that are made fun of because of that. People are judged by the way they dress and by the way they present them selfs. They are considered underclassman because of having not a lot of money. I have a friend that doesnt have a lot of money and is sometimes made fun of because of that. I know where he lives and know what kind of house he lives in and other people dont know that.

People standing up for what they believe in..

Although I am not religious, I have been around a lot of people who are. The way they are able to remain strong in their beliefs inspires me. They have hope in something greater than themselves and I think that's really cool. They withstand a lot of critisism and questioning, especially from epople like me and they are able to take it in full. I admire people who can stand up for what they believe in and not be wavered by predjudice.

The poor prejudice against the rich because they are jealous. They want to be rich but they cannot, so they just say that the rich always waste their money and they are doing no good. Because the poor and the rich are living in " different place" , sometimes they just don't understand each others.

I think this book is a very good book, because it deals with real life situations going on at that time, and unfortanately is still going on now today. I know people who have alot of money tend to be very selffish and gready with it. Its all about me, me, me, me. And when they see some homeless guy on the street they dont even bother giving them the time of day. This is sad but very true. If I were rich with a lot of money, I would try to help the needy as much as I can. I would give away items that I didnt use anymore, and I'll give a homeless guy some of my spear change.
