John Brown was a man who practiced insurrection as a means to stop slavery. He lead the Pottawatomie Massacre in Bleeding Kansas and made his name in the unsuccessful raid at Harpers Ferry in 1859.President Abraham Lincoln said he was a "misguided fanatic" and Brown has been called "the most controversial of all 19th-century Americans." His attempt in 1859 to start a liberation movement among enslaved African Americans in Harpers Ferry, Virginia electrified the nation. He was tried for treason against the state of Virginia, the murder of five proslavery Southerners, and inciting a slave insurrection and was subsequently hanged. Southerners alleged that his rebellion was the tip of the abolitionist iceberg and represented the wishes of the Republican Party. Historians agree that the Harpers Ferry raid in 1859 escalated tensions that a year later led to secession and the American Civil War. Brown first gained attention when he led small groups of volunteers during the Bleeding Kansas crisis. Unlike most other Northerners, who still advocated peaceful resistance to the pro-slavery faction, Brown demanded violent action in response to Southern aggression. Dissatisfied with the pacifism encouraged by the organized abolitionist movement, he reportedly said "These men are all talk. What we need is action - action!" During the Kansas campaign he and his supporters killed five pro-slavery southerners in what became known as the Pottawatomie Massacre in May 1856, in response to the raid of the "free soil" city of Lawrence. In 1859 he led a raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (in modern-day West Virginia). During the raid, he.

On October, 16, 1859 John Brown and several of his buddies seized the United States army, and Arsenal at Harpers Ferry. The actions of Brown's men brought national attention to the emotional divisions concerning slavery. John Brown was born in Connecticut in 1800 and became interested in the abolitionist movement around 1835. in 1855 Brown and several of his sons moved to Kansas, a territory deeply divided over the slavery issue. On Pottawotamie Creek, on the night of May 24, 1856, Brown and his sons murdered five men who supported slavery, although none actually owned slaves. Brown and his sons escaped. Brown spent the next three years collecting money from wealthy abolitionist in order to establish a colony for runaway slaves. To accomplish this Brown needed weapons and decided to capture the arsenal at Harpers Ferry. In 1794, President George Washington had selected Harpers Ferry, Virginia, and Springfield, Massachusetts, as the sites of the new national armories. In choosing Harpers Ferry he noted the benefit of great waterpower provided by both the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers. In 1817, the federal government contracted with John H. hall to manufacture his patented rifles at Harpers Ferry. The armory and arsenal continued producting weapons until its destruction at the outbreak of the Civil war. In the summer of 1859, John Brown, using the pseudonym Isaac Smith took up residence near Harpers Ferry at a Farm in Maryland. He trained a group of twenty two men including his sons Oliver Owen and Watson, in military maneuvers. On the night of Sunday, October 16, Brown and all but three of the men marched into Harpers Ferry capturing several watchmen. First victim of the raid was an African American rail road baggage handler named Hayward Shepherd, Who was shot and killed after confronting the raiders. During the night, Brown captured several other prisoners, including Lewis Washington the great grand nephew of George Washington.

In my Opinion, I would have not done the same thing as John brown did in Harper's Ferry in 1856, because it was a risky move for both John brown and the state of Virginia. John Brown got hung for his action in killing five Southerners just to start a liberation movement in West Virginia. Now what was that going to do for the People of West Virginia, people of the north would both band southerns and dislike the them for what John Brown did at Harper's Ferry in West Virginia.

I agree that the raid of Harpers Ferry in 1859 escalated tensions that a year later led to secession and the American Civil War. Brown first gained attention when he led small groups of volunteers during the bleeding Kansas crisis. It was a big deal because he did that stuff with the Bleeding Kansas crisis and he had got hung for doing what he had done. Brown demanded violent action in response to the Southern aggression. He was a man that did good but he got hung.

John Brown was a man of action and a man who would not be taken from his mission of abolishing slavery. On October 16, 1859 e led 21 men on a raid of the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. His plan was to give the slaves weapons that he and his men had stolen from the arsenal had backfired, by local farmers, militiamen, and marines. Within 36 hours of the attack most oh John Brown’s men were either captured, or killed. John was born in to a very religious family in Torrington, Connecticut, in 1800. When john was 5 they moved to Ohio, to a district that would become known for its antislavery. If I were to be in his position I probably would have done the same thing, but try not to get killed while doing it because I don’t think slavery is fair, in my opinion if people want things done why don’t they do it themselves instead of making people do it for them. During his first 50 yrs he had moved to 4 different places, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts, along with his ever growing family. He and his wife had 20 children together. He lived until he was 59 yrs old and he was hung on December 2, 1859 along with some of his sons. He was also a son of a wandering New Englander. In 1820 he married Dianthe Lusk, who gave him 7 children, and then 5 yrs later they moved to Pennsylvania to operate a tanning business of their own. After a year after his wife, Dianthe’s, death in 1831, Brown married 16 yr old Mary Ann Day, who gave him 13 children. During the next 24 yrs he built and sold several more tanneries, speculated in land sales, and raised sheep. He was found guilty of treason against Virginia and was hung at Charleston on December 2, 1859.

John Brown was a radical abolitionist, and practiced armed insurrection to free enslaved people. He was born in Connecticut in 1800. He was involved in Bleeding Kansas. Brown captured several prisoners. In order for the raid to be successful, the men needed to capture the weapons and get out before people found out at Washington, D.C. Also, Brown expected local slaves to rise up against their owners and join the raid. News people began shooting at the raiders, and none of the slaves joined the raid. When the raiders attempted to escape, there were injuries, and Brown was seriously injured by Lieutenant Israel Green’s sword. He was brought to trial at the Jefferson County Courthouse on October 26. Brown was sentenced to death for treason against the Commonwealth of Virginia. He was hanged in Charles Town on December 2. I would not have done the same things that Brown did. I think this event is so significant to history because John Brown intended to show how serious and important the abolition of slavery was. He showed how much he wanted to end slavery, even though he broke the law when he did. According to him, John Brown intended to make a clean thing of the matter, and didn’t intend murder, treason, the destruction of property, or to make insurrection.

John was an American
John was an American abolitionist and a folk hero who advocated and practiced armed insurrection ion order to end all slavery. He was the man that led the Pottawatomie Massacre in 1856 in Bleeding Kansas, Bleeding Kansas also known as the Bloody Kansas or even the Border war. The Bleeding Kansas was a series of violent events, involving anti-slavery Free- Staters and pro-slavery elements. These events took place in the Kansas Territory and the western frontier towns of the U.S. state of Missouri between 1854 and 1858. Brown first directed attention to himself when he led small groups of volunteers during the Bleeding Kansas. While most people were pro-slavery John Brown was against slavery, so John Brown and his and his supporters killed the pro-slavery people. This event was the Pottawatomie Massacre in 1856. I think I would have done the same thing if I were in his position because he strongly stuck to his belief and tried to make a difference and change things to what he believed. I think think this event this event is so significant in our history because it was the event that started the Civil War. John Brown is sometimes memorialized as a heroic martyr and a visionary and sometimes vilified as a madman and a terrorist. He “ killed slavery, sparked the Civil War, and seeded civil rights”, according to Richard Owen Boyer. John Brown was a man of action, a man who would not be deterred from his mission of abolishing slavery. On October 16, 1859, he led 21 men on a raid of the federal arsenal at Harper Ferry, Virginia. On this raid his plan who to arm the slaves with the weapons that they man and him had seized from the arsenal. Within 36 hours of the attack, most of Brown's men had been killed or captured. John Brown was obviously a brave man who had a strong belief and was dedicated to his belief.
