Workday 6 April 26th

Despite a rainy evening last night, today was a fantastic workday. The weather was cool and the ground was soft but not soaking. We didn't have many turn up to help but those who did worked very hard! We had a student volunteer from Lehman High School working on some community service hours for church. Kerri Jones completely cleaned the pond which had become overgrown with algae. Stacey Magnesio worked hard at building out the rock edging around the cactus area and it is looking fantastic. Art Sedillo from 4 A's told Kerri that we could come help ourselves to what we needed at his business and we could have whatever we could load in her truck. That was awesome! We got 3 Crape Myrtles, a red maple, a red bud and various shrubs such as sage, salvia, plumbago and lantana. They will attract hummingbirds and butterflies to the garden. The AC screens built by Carrie Adams' father, Val really look great. We were fortunate to get our mulch for free from PEC's tree trimmings that they chip into mulch. What do we have left to do? We need to hang our dry erase board for an instructional area, add some student art, finish the edging, weed barrier and mulching, lay the decomposed granite path and rock in along the foundation. We also need to connect up the utility sink, repair a picnic table and  a soaker hose. We have applied for a Schoolyard Habitat certification from the National Wildlife federation and hope to have that before the end of school. Please come by and see our efforts and if possible donate some time after school to our project! Thanks for your support!
