Our China and U.S. Web Conference Today, June 3 & 4, 2008

This was an exciting day. Please read everyone's comments on our web conference. Since that day Yaodong and I have created a PowerPoint presentation that is posted on this blog page. Please view this to see what we did.

web conference

The web conference was really fun! I had a good time hearing about Chinese life and how good all your students English was! It was fun talking to Ashley and learning about her life and telling her about ours. It was also very fun to sing to you and to hear your wonderful singing. Thank you for participating in the web conference! I had a really great time.

Thank you all,PHHS friends!

Dear students,
I am so happy to meet you online at 5 pm of June 3 (8 a.m. of June 4th ,our local time). My excitement is not yet over.I wish my students have found time to log on to the blog and contribute.I told them in the class yesterday that our epal project should go on though we have had the e-conference.I hope they will continue writing emails during the summer.
Our online interaction is far beyond language practice---my students not only improve their English but also learn about life in USA,which greatly motivates them in learning the language. One-on-one chat with webcam on added more fun in the interaction. When students see how their pals look like, how their facial expressions are,how they pronounce certain words/phrases,they can visualize sitting face to face just like real and they can hardly tear them away from the chat. One student decided there and then that she would get her father to buy her a computer next week so that she can use it for learning English online.
It was a pity our desktops had problems with Yahoo messenger while your laptop had similar problems with Skype.I hope students on both sides can use Yahoo messenger or skype in their home computers so that they can arrange time for further contacts online. I am ready to help when you need me online. My Yahoo ID is 'yaodongchen2002@yahoo.com '
Tomorrow it is the Dragon boat festival in China. What do you know to know about this traditional holiday? Just let us know. (BTW,dragon in China is called loong which differs in size ,shape and appearance from dragon in the western countries)
Thanks for your attention.

Speaking Chinese

I was very happy I got the opportunity to practice my Chinese before I head to China. Quitong Chen was very helpful and translated all the words I was not familiar with. I was very suprised at the level of the Chinese students English. They all spoke very well. If there was another opportunity to participate in a web conference, I most definitely would be there.

Thank you!

It was an amazing experience, even though I wasn't able to communicate with my own epal. I took a virtual tour and became a part of your classroom. My face was physically in your classroom in China! I wish I was able to visit and be there and see all of our class mates on the computer. I enjoyed seeing the photos you sent of your classroom. I had a lot of fun talking to all of the different students and I was really excited to meet and learn new things. I surprisd me how well they spoke English. I enjoyed the two students who sang to us, they both had beautiful voices and it was very nice of them to sing. I wish I was a good singer like they are. It was very interesting to hear them sing in Chinese. I've never heard that before. It is very unique. Thank you once again for this amazing experience, and I hope to keep in contact with you all.

We Conference

The web conference was so cool. Finally getting to see who we had been talking to and interacting with for weeks was a major payoff after emailing back and forth for so long. I felt like I had actually traveled there to China and hopefully they felt like they had traveled to America as well.
It was truly a pleasure =)

Web Conference

I enjoyed the entire epals experience and was so happy that I could talk one-on-one with some of the Chinese students, web cam to web cam. It was so much fun talking to Lena and Bill. It was unfortunate that I couldn't see and talk to my epal but I had fun either way. And I have learned a lot from this experience. I learned that many of the sudents' English was very good and I could understand them almost perfectly. I also learned how big was the huge impact of the earthquake. I wish I could learn even more and I wish the epal exchange and the web conferece would not end.

Thank you Mrs. Pauchnick and Mr. Chen for making this possible. =]

Web Conference

I definitely learned a lot from the web conference. Even though I did not get the chance to talk to one of the Chinese students, I still took in a lot about their traditions and what not. I was talking to one of the Chinese students on Yahoo instant messenger though, at the same time. I love talking to the Chinese people and I feel I definitely learn a lot from them. The conference also let me put a face to the voice. I did not meet my Chinese student but I did meet the other students in my classes Chinese students. I will continue talking to my Chinese student and I hope that I build a great and healthy relationship with them.

Thank you

Ariel B

E-pals Web meeting

This was a really cool thing to watch, even though i did not get to connect to a student personally it was still cool to watch my peers talk to them. It was like they were right in my class room! Its amazing to see what technology can do for people all the way across the world.

Video Chat

I really enjoyed the video chat.I enjoyed talking to the students in China because I could actually see the people who we were writing epal lettters with. Out of all the talking though I found the singing to be really fun; the students in China had very pretty voices. The only thing that I wished could have happened was to chat one-on-one on our own computers; but I understand that the Chinese lab computers had difficulties with Yahoo and our individual computers had difficulty getting Skype. I really enjoyed this web conference because I could connect with and see the students in China. Hopefully I can talk one-on-one with my own epal at some point.

I had such a great time

I had such a great time talking with my epal Song!
I have much admiration for the Chinese students. Learning a new language is always difficult but they seem to be learning quickly. Just knowing that you are looking at someone that is on the other side of the world is AMAZING! I hope to continue talking to epals. I think this program is a wonderful way to connect students around the world and break down barriers caused by language, space and nationality.

It was so exciting! The

It was so exciting! The little screen has shortened the long distance between us. All of you are conversable. But I was too nervous to talk to you fluenttly. I hope we can be in touch with each other and I hope I can get more chances to speak to you. Maybe next time I will do a good job! =)

China Confrence

I really enjoyed doing the e-pal connect to china. It's always really fun to have a face to put to a name. Lena was nothing like i expected she was bubbly and had a wonderful personality, but just from emails i couldn't see that. I'm so happy that I could be a part of this experience I feel I really took a lot out of it.

Thank you Mrs. Pauchnick!

I am still excited over the conference!

Thanks for the feedback,buddies.
My students were still talking about the event long after the class and they spread the news to their peers in other classes, too. What a wonderful experience it was for them! From now on,they know the importance of learning a foreign language by using it whenever possible.
They look forward to talking to you on one-on-one basis soon. Do you try Yahoo messenger or Skype when you are home? Here students all use QQ.

Beautifully done!

This is unforgettable day for students on both sides.. ..

It is kind of messy when we both have to help a large class online.but students in our classes did a very good job.I wish my students had brought some traditional chinese musical instruements too. The singers were Yan Liu and Su Li huan.I will tell the names of others students wehn i see the photos from you.
I have more photos from my end to add your ppt file.I am sending them to you today or tomorrow,OK?
I wish my students could speak better English. You know Chen qiutong was anxious while and after talking to Dahnny. She kept asking me how she could connect him or other students on her own. Many other students were trying desperately to install Yahoo messengers onto their desktop but our technician had configurated the machines in a way that no students are allowed to instal Instant messengers.
So,some students said they would do it during the summer at home so that they keep in touch with yours.I do hope this exchange can go on and on even after we finish this semester. New ideas have grown in the minds of my students who have seen the value of on-line English. This can be a revolution in learning English for them.
We all enjoyed meeting Momo. She certainly look very pretty and she speaks excellent Chinese, which impressed the whole class. She worked as a interpretor for our conference, too. We all appreciated the time and effort you have given to make this happen.I wish Kate ( Xu Hui ) and her classmates were able to join us too.In fact,i saw her,Lorraine on Skype while our students were talking to one another but i just couldn't invite them coz i was worried about possible disconnection of Yahoo chat at that moment.
time now for me to go to XU hui's class.I will be with them till 10 in the evening.I want to tell them something about e-conference.I wish I could see the ppt file now on your school page so that i can download and take it to her class. It must be fun for them to see,to share, too.
