Holidays- USA

Okay.
My name is Tori, I am a 13- year old girl and I live in Rochester, NY, which is in the United States. The dominent religion of the US is Christianity, although, personally, I am a Reform Jew. In my specific shool (twelve Corners Middle School), there are quite a few Jews, but in the surrounding districts, some of my friends are one of two of three Jews in the entire school.
In the US we celebrate Holloween, Thanksgiving, the 4th of July, and New Years, although most celebrate Christmas, too, and Easter.
My family doesn't really do much for these American holidays, but we celebrate all of the Jewish holidays. My personal favorites are probably Purim and Channukkah.

Holidays in Rochester NY

My name is Zoe and I am also jewish, but my mom is catholic, so on Christmas and easter i go to my grandparents house, go to church, and celebrate those holidays. Everyone on my Mom's side of the family comes out for Christmas, we have a nice dinner Christmas night and the rest of the time we play cards; hearts and gin, and play outside. For the jewish holidays, one of my favorites is probably Rosh Hashanah, despite the long services, they can last about three hours, which really isn't that long, since i am reform, many people have much longer services. Another of my favorite holidays is Passover or Pesach, i love seders. Like Tori said, there are a lot of jews in our school, but many of them have one non-jewish parent.

10th June- a Portuguese National holiday

Hello, from Portugal!

I'm writing to share with you a coming National holiday here, in Portugal. On the 10th June we are commemorating a holiday. It's a national one, related to one of the greatest writers we've already have... Luís de Camões... have you heard about him?? He wrote one very important book OS LUSÍADAS, in poetry about the history of Portugal. It is considered the Portugal Day and we also celebrate the fact that Portugal conquered many places, like in Africa, or Brazil!

Hope you liked to know about this holiday!

Helena.

The most important religious ceremonies in my country is Christmas and Easter. At Christmas time people give their friends and family gifts.

My dominant religion Katelyn, U.S.A

The dominant religion in my country is christianity.majorholidays are Christmas and Easter. People gather together and share the story of Jesus's birth and Easter is about his death. We light up trees with strings of lights on Christmas and hide and find eggs on Easter. My favorite part of Easter is lent. For 40 days before Easter you give up something, it might be a certain food (like chocolate) or playing on the computer. Most people feel that all religions have their own belifes and respect that but a few are judgemental. I cannot wait to celebrate the birth of my savior and see all of my family. I hope everyone celebrating a holiday this season is ready and excited! Happy Holidays

New Years is the holiday where people stay up really late on Dec. 31 and wait for midnight and celebrate the new year. They usually televise a big celebration in Times Square, New York City, NY. When it gets close to midnight they start a countdown and everyone joins in. When it's finally midnight, they drop this gigantic ball loaded with confetti, from about four stories up. Every body makes a toast with whatever drink they're holding at the time. My family usually has a big party on New Years Eve. On the actual day of New Years we usually go over to my grandmas' house and have a big dinner with my family.

Holidays Around the World

My name is Shelby and I am 12 years old. I live in Owasso, Oklahoma in the United States of America. I go to Owasso 7th Grade Center. Most people in America celebrate Christmas. Christmas is celebrating the birth of Jesus, son of God, in the Christian religion. My family celebrates the holiday by putting up a Christmas tree. A Christmas tree is a pine tree. We hang decorative glass bulbs on the tree and also lights and stars. On the night before Christmas, parents leave gifts underneath the tree so that when the children wake up, they recieve their gifts. Other than Christmas, my favorite holiday is Halloween. On Halloween, children and teenagers dress in decorative costumes. They go door-to-door and trick-or-treat. When you hold out your basket and say "Trick-or-treat", the people participating will give you candies and other treats.
The most common religion in America is Protestant, a part of the Christian belief system. One of the most important holidays for this relion is Easter Sunday. This is the day Christ rose from the dead in the Christian religion. Most people do celebrate these holidays. Most Christians are tolerant with other religions. Some even want to learn more about other religions. Another religion in America is Judaism. Around the same time as Christmas, the Jewish celebrate Hannukah.

Holidays in the U.S.A.

Hello, my name is Allison. I am a 13 year old girl. I live in Owasso, Oklahoma, in the U.S.A. I go to school at the Owasso 7th Grade Center.
We celebrate different holidays in a different way.
January 1st, New Years- We celebrate it with fireworks, blow horns, parties, confetti, and green items. We celebrate this because it is the first day of "the new year".
February 14th, Valentines Day- Valentines day is a special day for you and your loved ones. It is a day full of hearts, flowers, chocaltes, and love. Its where you give your boyfriend/ girlfriend or husband/ wife candies or teddy bears. Its a day to say "i love you".
April 4th, Easter- April 4th is the day Jesus was resurrected or came back from the dead. On Easter the Easter Bunny comes and hides eggs and we have a little scavenger hunt and look for the eggs. The eggs are filled with candie and money. Also the night before you put a basket out and the Easter Bunny fills it with presents, candies, and money.
October 31st, Halloween- On Halloween kids and sometimes adults get to dress up as whatever they like for one night and go around neighborhoods and knock on doors and when the owners of the house open the door you say "trick or treat" and the owners give you a piece of candy.
November 26th, Thanksgiving- We celebrate Thansgiving for the pilgrims and indians. On Thanksgiving all of your relatives get together and spend time with each other and cook a big dinner. Usually people cook turkey, ham, potatoes, carrots, dressing, stuffing, rolls, gravy, cranberry sauce, and pie.
December 25th, Christmas- Christmas is my favorite holiday. It is a beautiful holiday. You set up Christmas trees and lights around your house and decorate it alot. ALl of your family comes and you give eachother presents and Santa Clause comes and leaves you presents during the night and you wake up the next morning and get to open the presents.
The dominant religion in our country is Christain. Communion and being babtized are two of the important religious ceremonies. When you get babtized you are showing that you truly believe in God and you want to live for Him, you usually only get babtized once in your life. After you are babtized you are a son or daughter of God. You may then partake in communion which goes on every Sunday at the church service. Christains are mostly open to other religions, we don't force people to come to our religion, we try to help the people who make bad choices like drugs or alchohal and try to guide them towards God but we never force anyone. We are just happy that people believe in God.

On Thanksgiving you eat turkey, potatoes, dressing or it can be called stuffing, rolls, pumpkin pie, cranberry sauce, and all types of pies. Thanksgiving is on the last Thursday of November.
Easter is to celebrate the resurection of Jesus Christ. On Easter your parents hide eggs, either real or plastic. If they hide plastic eggs they usually put candy inside them. Easter is celebrated on the first Sunday of April.

www.owasso.k12.ok.us

My favorite holiday is Christmas. On Christamas Eve the family gathers at my house and we all sit around the Christmas tree and sing Christmas carols, and at 10:00 we open all the gifts around the tree. Then everyone goes home and goes to sleep to wait for Santa. When we wake we go into the living room and all the gifts are there. We call each other and tell what we got from Santa, usually thats the best stuff. My favorite part is being with family and having a blast.

Christmas

Hi. I'm Maddie, I'm an eleven year old girl from Oklahoma. I go to the Owasso Sixth Grade Center. Our school website is www.owasso.k12.ok.us My favorite holiday is Christmas, we always get a Christmas tree and decorate it with ornatments and lights. Then when Christmas morning comes we get up and open all of the presents. Then we call all of our friends and family and thank them and tell them what we got. The best part is, is that I get to spend time with family and friends.

Holidays

My name is Celeste. I am a girl from Owasso, Oklahoma in the United States. Most people here are Christian so we celebrate Christmas. "Santa Clause" gives presents to all the boys and girls who had been good that year. If they were bad, they get coal. There is a lot of giving in this time of year. We have this holiday because it celebrates Christ's birth. I love this holiday!

Sydney -U.S.A

Hi, my name is Sydney and I am an 11 year old girl who is from Owasso, Oklahoma. I go to the Owasso 6th Grade Center. My school website is

 http://owasso6.wikispaces.com.

My favorite holidays are Thanksgiving and Christmas. In my family for Thanksgiving we go to my grandma's house and eat a lot of food like ham, turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, and corn. It is mainly just a time to hang out and talk. For Christmas we wake up and open presents, but before we do that we put up a christmas tree. We decorate it with lights, beads, garland, and ornaments. Every family does their christmas tree a different way. Sometimes on Christmas Eve we have a special dinner or watch a Christmas movie. On christmas day, after we open presents, we play games. That is what my family does on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Our traditions in the USA

I am 12 years old. I am a girl and am from the USA. I am from Owasso 6th grade center. You can go to owassops.k12.ok.us to learn more. I celebrate Chirstmas by puting up a tree and going to church on Christmas. I love Christmas. Our dominant religion is Chirstian. The one of the most is the baptisim, Easter Sunday, and Christmas. And I would say, on a scale of 1-10, it would probably be an 8 of how many people paricapate. I think they respect their beliefs.

Norway

I'm a 14 years old girl from Norway. The main religion in my country is Christianity, therefor we celebrate christmas, well many do. 'Cause it's many different people that lives here, who celebrates their holidays. I celebrate christmas; on the 24th of December we celebrate the birth of Jesus. In the morning we watch christmas programs on the TV. In the evening we eat food, I eat something called "pinnekjøtt", and then we open the presents from under the tree. Before the 24th of December we decorate the house, outside we put ligts on the house or on our trees, inside we decorate with copies of the Santa Class, called "nisser" in Norwegian. They look like him, but aren't him. Merry Christmas! Or in Norwegian: God Jul!

Christmas in Norway

Hallo! I live in Norway. We celebrate Cristmas on the 24. December. First many people go in the church, so at the evening, we eat very good food. After that we go around the Christmas tree, befor we open many pressents form family and friends. We eat rib and turkey and other good dinner. We have Christmas cookies that we have make ourselves. In the Christmas holyday we also celebrate new year.

Holidays in Greece

In Greece the predominant religion is Christianity. So, the two most important holidays are Christmas/'Christougenna'as we call it and Easter, but we consider 15th of August, the Assumption of Virgin Maria, important too, because the Virgin has a special post in our religion for us, Orthodox Christians. Very important and great fun, and a favourite with all children, is also the Carnival time, which is something like Halloween in US, only that in Greece is always at the end of winter (sometime between February and March) with culminating day the Ash Monday (or "Clean Monday" / "Kathari Deftera" in Greek) 40 days before Easter. On Ash Monday, it is traditional to go to the countryside for a picnic, fly kites, and begin fasting for Easter by eating Lenten food (not that we keep fasting for very long - definitely not 40 days!) Another fun Holiday is New Year's Day. In Greece we celebrate it with parties and we stay up late! Schools have 15 days holiday at Christmas (24 December - 7 January) and 15 days at Easter (starting one week before Easter). I think people are quite tolerant in Greece. They don't mind what's your religion when they like you and want to make friends with you.
