Fifth and Sixth Tuesdays: Due by 8:00AM on Friday, December 19

Two Questions:

1. Mitch's brother was ill with cancer. How did his interaction with his brother differ from that with Morrie?

2. How did it help Morrie to 'detach himself from the experience?'

Reply to these questions and comment on two classmates' replies.

1.Mitch does not have a deep

1.Mitch does not have a deep connection with his brother the same way he has with Morrie. Morrie and Mitch have an almost father-son relationship, which allows them to be open and honest with each other, and establish a deep connection. Mitch and his brother are not that connected, and there was a sort of tension between the two.

2.As Morrie gets closer and closer to death he has resigned himself to become more and more detached from the real world. He knows his time on Earth is limited, and so he is trying to slowly become less attached to it, and prepare himself for death. Morrie is not only physically dying, he is preparing himself spiritually and mentally for it.

I agree with Mike and Morrie

I agree with Mike and Morrie and Mitch do have a father-son relationship. They may even be closer than father and son, but possibly more like best friends.

I hope the process that Morrie does to mentall and spirtually prepare himself to die is one that he enjoys and takes solace in, because I have grown to really like Morrie and I hope he doesn't suffer.

i agree with this.

i agree with this.

Mike made a good point,

Mike made a good point, detaching himself is definitely allowing Morrie to mentally prepare for death.  Like Mike said, detaching himself from the world will make dying easier.

I agree with Mike, Mitch and

I agree with Mike, Mitch and Morrie have most definately formed a father-son relationship, which is entirely different from what Mitch had with his own brother.

I agree.

I agree.

i agree because if Morrie

i agree because if Morrie detaches himself from the rest of world will help morrie accept his death more and will allow him to miss it less

I agree with Michael. Morrie

I agree with Michael. Morrie is preparing mentally for his death. Morrie's mental preparation will help him a lot in making him realize himself that he is eventually going to die.

I agree with Mike that

I agree with Mike that Morrie and Mitch have a very strong relationship that is almost a father-son relationship. Which is why they are so close and honest with eachother, and also why Mitch is able to listen to what Morrie has to say and really listen to it and take it all in.

I agree with Mike because I

I agree with Mike because I believe also that by detaching himself from society it will make it easier on him to die and leave things behind. He will not miss it as much.

Mike is right..  there was

Mike is right..  there was a certain tension between Mitch and his borther that doesnt exist between Morrie and Mitch.

And it is completely correct to say that Morrie is spiritually preparing to die by detaching.

I think morrie and mike have

I think morrie and mike have a great relationship, there is nothing they can hide from each other.

Morrie is finally starting to accept the fact that he is dieing and statrting to realize it might be better.

It differed from Morrie

It differed from Morrie because as Morrie is sick nitch becomes closer to him but Mitch just grew farther from his brother when he was sick with cancer.

Mitch detaches from the experience by taking it all in and understanding that at any point he could die

I wished that Mitch's

I wished that Mitch's brother was close to his family when he was suffering because you really need people to rally around you in times of suffering. It has been really good for Morrie to keep busy and have lots of visitors and letters that he responds to expressing people's love and support for him.

I agree with Keri.  Mitch

I agree with Keri.  Mitch definitely grew closer to Morrie because of the sickness and was driven further from his brother because of his sickness.

i agree because mitch does

i agree because mitch does come alot closer with morrie than he does with his brother. Mitch just grows further apart from his brother and closer with Morrie

i agree with Kari and any

i agree with Kari and any moment Morrie could die so he needs to make the best of his life he has now

1. Mitch's brother does not

1. Mitch's brother does not want to interact with other people as he is suffering but instead wants to hide out in Europe. Meanwhile, Morrie loves having lots of people around him and does not want to be alone.

2. Morrie detaches himself from "the experience" by mentally preparing himself for dying. He knows he is physically ready because his body is acting like it is almost done, but I think he is surviving for his spirit. Once Morrie is mentally prepared and ready to die, his body will be more than ready to give up and let him peacefully die.

1.  When Mitch's brother

1.  When Mitch's brother was ill he didn't want any help from or interaction with his family.  Mitch tried to make a connection, but his brother didn't want one.  When Morrie is sick he enjoys his interaction with people.  Mitch makes a strong connection with Morrie.

2. By detaching himself Morrie can overcome the feeling and fears related to his death and simply enjoy life.

Yea i agree Mitch did try to

Yea i agree Mitch did try to help but his brothers refusal made the distance between them grow

I agree with Nicole, by

I agree with Nicole, by Morrie detatching himself it's alot easier for him to except his death and enjoy life.

I agree with Nicole.

I agree with Nicole. Mitch do not have a close connection with his brother. Morrie is preparing to die and feels the need to have people around him to listen to him and to support him.

I agree with Nicole, that

I agree with Nicole, that Morrie's detachment has allowed him to enjoy life and see it clearly and that by talking to Mitch and his other friends and family he really gets to express his feelings and his acceptance of death.

1. Mitch's brother wanted to

1. Mitch's brother wanted to fight his illness entirely by himself and wouldnt even let his family see him. He barely kept i touch for them not exactly caring that it was just as hard for his family as it was for him. With Morrie, Mitch can visit him, feel comfort in comforting Morrie as well as see the process, despite how painful it is to see. Mitch never even got to see his brother.

2. Morrie says that you have to fully recognize an emotion, to completly experience it and only then can you can you detach yourself from that emotion, even if it's even for a moment. Morrie seems to think that detatching youself from things you've already exerienced is not only how you learn to die, but also how you learn to live. These visits are how both Morrie and Mitch learn how to detach

i agree with danielle. What

i agree with danielle. What she says about Morrie saying you have to detach yourself from an emothion to feel it. I thought that was interesting when Morrie said that.

1. Mitch realizes that he

1. Mitch realizes that he doesn't have a good relationship with his brother but he has a better one with Morrie. The close bond he has formed with Morrie allows them to have a good relationship

2. It helped Morrie to detach himself from the experience because he knows that he's going to die soon and is trying to detatched himself from the world so he won't miss it as much and will be ready to die

I agree with Kc because I

I agree with Kc because I think its  good that Mitch has a close relationship with Morrie. I wished that Mitch was closer with his brother though.

1. Mitch do not have a

1. Mitch do not have a strong relationship with his brother. Mitch's brother does not show the need to have Mitch's presence next to him, while Morrie wants Mitch near him. Morrie loves to have conversation with people and love to share his feelings with others, especially with MItch.

2. Morrie is taking up courage to face the reality of death. He is strengthening his soul and getting ready to die.

Mitch’s interaction with

  1. Mitch’s interaction with his brother during his fight with cancer was very different from his interaction with Morrie. Mitch’s brother shut him and the rest of his family out while he was fighting the cancer. He refused to allow them to see him while he was in a fragile state, and would not even respond to voicemails. Because Mitch felt guilty that he was not the one who was sick, and the fact that his brother was not allowing him and his family any contact, he fell into his work more and more. With Morrie, Mitch reflects on life and becomes distant from his work, not making it his number one priority at every point of the day.
  2. Morrie detaches himself from the experience by mentally and spiritually preparing himself to die, because he knows it is unavoidable. His body is physically preparing to die, so he is preparing himself by detaching from the world and just reflecting on his life and life in general.

when Mitch's brother was ill

when Mitch's brother was ill with cancer he secluded himself from others and didnt want to see his family including Mitch. Mitch didnt ever have a chance to really talk to him or see him while he was dying and Mitch regrets it. Now with Morrie MItch can actually talk to him and help him through it and he wont loose contact so he has nothing to feel guilty about.

It helps Morrie to detach himself from his dying experience because no one wants to remember all the time that they are dying. They already feel it because their body is sick and Morrie wants to forget about it. I would feel the same way.

1) Mitch's brother did not

1) Mitch's brother did not want his family to see him and he wanted to fight the illness he had by himself. Also Mitch realizes that he has a better relationship with Morrie than his own brother.

2) it helps Morrie to detach from this experience becase he knows if he detached himself from the world, it will be easier to not miss it as much. He knows he is dying soon so it makes it easier for him.

1. Although Mitch and his

1. Although Mitch and his brother were brothers and theoretically expected to be closer, they weren't. they didnt have the special type of connection that Mitch and Morrie currently share.

2. Morrie simply sees that if he begins to 'detach' himself from life he can be better prepared the death that he will soon face
